Andre Russell included as hosts West Indies announce 15-man squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024

West Indies will kick-off their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Papua New Guinea on June 2.

Two-time champions and co-hosts of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies have announced their 15-man squad for the tournament on May 3. The marquee tournament will kick-off on June 1.

The hosts have named Rovam Powell as their captain. While fast bowler Alzarri Joseph will serve as Powell’s deputy in the upcoming ICC tournament, Both the star players are currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 for their respective franchises.

The West Indies’ cricket board Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named Johnson Charles, Shai Hope and Brandon King as their main batters in the squad. Hope is also currently playing in the IPL 2024, where he is plying his trade for Delhi Capitals and is looking in great touch.

To add more fire-power in the middle order, the hosts included Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetymer, Sherfane Rutherford. For strengthening the lower-middle order, the cricket board added all-rounders Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder.

After a stunning test series against Australia earlier this year, rising WI pacer Shamar Joseph has also been included in the 15-man line-up. In the spin bowling department, CWI has picked Roston Chase, Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie for the upcoming ICC tournament.

In a surprising turn of events, CWI didn’t named any list of reserve players for the marquee event. The co-hosts will play their first match against Papua New Guinea on June 2. Then they will take on Uganda on June 8, followed by the remaining two matches against New Zealand and Afghanistan.
