According to a Cricbuzz report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken action against Riyan Parag for the incident. He has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee. This comes under a Level 1 offence in the Code of Conduct.
The fine is a big amount. Parag earns around Rs 1 crore per match from his contract. This means the penalty is close to Rs 25 lakh. It is considered a heavy fine for a first-time offence.
The board charged him under Article 2.21. This rule covers actions that bring the game into disrepute. It is used when an offence is not clearly defined in the rulebook.
“Article 2.21 is intended to cover all types of conduct that bring the game into disrepute and which is not specifically or adequately covered by the specific offences set out in the COC.”
Parag admitted to the offence. He accepted the punishment given by the match referee. He also received one demerit point for the breach.
Reports say he has the option to appeal. However, he is likely to accept the fine and move forward. The incident happened during the match against the Punjab Kings.
BCCI is also considering taking strict action. They want to ensure such incidents do not happen again. The aim is to protect IPL’s image.
