BCCI is all set to introduce new fitness tests like Bronco and 2k for Team India.

Modern-day cricket is not only about skill or pressure handling. In fact, the demands of modern-day cricket have changed, and fitness has become a key part of this sport.

To compete at the highest level, a cricketer needs to be physically fit. Not just for international cricket, cricketers also focus on their fitness to stay relevant for franchise cricket.

Although Indian cricketers do not participate in any league other than the Indian Premier League, they are among the finest players in the sport.

The BCCI’s fitness policy is very strict, but the rising number of injuries in the team has forced the board to introduce a new fitness test.

A TOI report reveals that the board and management team are unhappy with physio Kamlesh Jain. The report further states that the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) is set to implement a uniform fitness test, such as the Bronco and 2-km run, to assess players’ fitness.

Key differences between Yo-Yo, Bronco and 2K Tests:

Yo-Yo Test

Virat Kohli is still among the best athletes in cricket, and under his captaincy, the Yo-Yo test was introduced. This test was used to assess the player’s endurance, speed, recovery time, and ability to handle pressure.

This is a shuttle-run test in which the player runs 20 meters at increasing speeds, with necessary recovery breaks. According to the new standard set by the BCCI, a score of 16.5 is required to pass the Yo-Yo Test. Notably, before the Bronco tests, the assessment parameter for the Indian team was 16.1.

Bronco Test

Last year, Adrian Le Roux, BCCI’s strength and conditioning coach, introduced the Bronco test for Team India. This is a high-intensity running drill that has long been used in rugby, yet very few teams in modern-day cricket utilise it.

This test assesses the player’s cardiovascular fitness in a simple yet rigorous manner. Four markers are set at a distance of 0, 20, 40, and 60 meters. The player must start from the starting line and complete the designated shuttle runs.

A set is completed when a player completes all three shuttle runs marked at 20, 40, and 60 meters, respectively. A player has to cover 240 meters in one set.

This test consists of five sets, totalling 1,200 meters. A player needs to complete five tests without stopping, and once they do, the time is recorded.

The 2K Test

This test is designed to assess the player’s cardiovascular strength and endurance. It includes a 2-Km run in the shortest possible time.

The key focus of this test is to measure how long a player can maintain a high level of effort. According to the CoE’s standard, the time period to complete this 2k run is 9 to 10 minutes.

What are the criteria to pass the Yo-Yo test for Team India?

A score of 16.5 is required to pass the Yo-Yo Test.
