Shubman Gill had his second best IPL season with the bat this year.
The Captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), Shubman Gill had a phenomenal season with the bat in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, scoring 732 runs in 16 matches. He looked in immaculate form striking above 160 with 45+ average throughout the season. He not just scored runs with the bat, but looked impressive in his captaincy role as well. Many experts picked Gill as their best captain of the season.
Shubman Gill led the GT to his maiden IPL finals as a captain, third finals for side in a span of five years. After a tricky start in the initial matches, GT bounced back, and then went on to defeat the then top four ranked teams of the points table under his leadership.
Despite missing out on one match in the league stage due to a stiff neck, Gill batted brilliantly throughout the season, with a match-winning century in the Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) to seal their spot in the final. Gill has had the neck injury concerns since 2025, when he got ruled out midway through the Test series vs South Africa.
The two-format Indian captain played non-stop cricket last year since after the IPL 2025, the 2 month long England tour was followed by the Asia Cup 2025, then quite immediately the West Indies Tests, the white-ball series vs Australia, finishing with the South Africa tour where he ultimately got injured. He returned in January in the ODIs against New Zealand. It was only after that series did he get some rest and then played the IPL.
A challenging international calendar awaits for Shubman Gill

The 26-year old Indian skipper will be keen on the preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 and the qualification for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-26 final. India will be playing five ODI series this year. They will host Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies at home and will play two away series vs England and New Zealand.
Apart from the white-ball games, the Indian Men’s Cricket Team will look to give a fight for the WTC Finals spot in the remaining Test matches. They have games away against Sri Lanka and New Zealand this year, while they play Australia at home in 2027. India are currently positioned at No.6 in the ICC WTC points table, and they need to win 7 out of the 9 Test matches in order to make it to the finals.
Gill’s next challenge will be against Afghanistan, whom India will host for one-off Test from June 6, and the three ODIs. While Gill had been given the opportunities in the T20 internationals with nearly 16 games on the trot, he was not able to make it count. However, the way Gill led his IPL side and batted throughout the season, some experts talked about his comeback in the T20 internationals.
Given that the next T20 World Cup will be played in the challenging conditions of Australia and New Zealand, a player who is more reliant on technique and can score runs in tougher situations will have to be prepared. Gill, in the IPL, has been the most consistent batsmen scoring 400+ in the last seven seasons, with Orange Cap in one.
