What's next for Suryakumar Yadav after winning T20 World Cup 2026 title?

Suryakumar Yadav led India to their second consecutive T20 World Cup title.

Suryakumar Yadav was on cloud nine as he led the Indian team to the T20 World Cup 2026 title. India defeated New Zealand in the final to lift the title on March 8, 2026, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The New Zealand captain, Mitchell Santner, had won the toss and asked India to bat first. However, the decision backfired, as India scored a mammoth 255/5 in 20 overs, including 3 half-centuries from Sanju Samson (89), Ishan Kishan (54), and Abhishek Sharma (52).

In response, New Zealand scored only 159 runs and lost by 96 runs, despite 52 from Tim Seifert and 43 from Mitchell Santner. India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah took 4/15 as India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team to win the competition three times. Axar Patel also took three wickets.

While the Indian team successfully defended their T20 World Cup crown, the focus has now turned to what’s next for the Indian team in T20Is and captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Surya’s performance was not particularly impressive in the tournament. He scored 242 runs in 9 matches, with just one half-century. He scored a golden duck in the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Surya revealed his future plans as the Indian captain after the T20 World Cup win

Suryakumar Yadav, along with India head coach Gautam Gambhir, attended the post-final press conference, where he was asked about what’s next for the Indian team. To which Surya replied that his eyes are set on an Olympic gold medal in T20 cricket and the 2028 T20 World Cup.

Cricket will return to the Olympics after more than 100 years. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added cricket to the Olympic roster for the first time since the 1900 Paris Olympics, with six teams in the men’s and women’s divisions competing for medals between July 14 to 29, 2028.

According to the current ICC T20I rankings, India are on track to qualify from Asia in both the men’s and women’s competitions. All of the matches will take place in the Fairgrounds Stadium, a temporary, purpose-built arena in Pomona, roughly 50 kilometers from Los Angeles.

On the other hand, the 2028 T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

“Obviously, it has been a wonderful journey in the last month, though it didn’t start the way we wanted it to start, but then it’s part of the sport throughout the journey till today. It has been very special, and collectively as a team, what we’ve achieved, I think it’s right in front of you, so very happy with that, and as you rightly said, definitely the next goal is the Olympics and also the T20 World Cup that year. Don’t forget,” Suryakumar said during the presser.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav will soon be seen in action for the Mumbai Indians as the IPL 2026 tournament begins on March 28.
