World T20I champions India are looking to bounce back to form during the Afghanistan T20Is.

The build-up to India’s next T20I assignment has already generated considerable interest. This excitement is due to the team management probably looking to make some important calls regarding player fitness and squad balance. The upcoming series against Afghanistan is a crucial chance for many players to make their much-awaited return in the shortest format of the game.

The Indian management is now aiming to build a long-term effective combination for the team. With the schedule confirmed, attention has now shifted to squad selection. With further uncertainty on Ajit Agarkar’s tenure, finalising the players for the upcoming Afghanistan series has also seemed uncertain.

As of September 1st, 2026, the BCCI has not officially announced a date for announcing the Indian squad for the Afghanistan T20I series. The three-match series is scheduled to begin on September 13, with the second and third matches on September 15 and 17, respectively, all at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan have already announced their squad for the series. They announced a 15-member squad led by skipper Ibrahim Zadran, who was recently appointed as Afghanistan’s full-time T20I skipper.

For India, the selection meeting is expected to take place this week, with the Indian selectors likely to assess several players who are currently undergoing rehabilitation. Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar are among players who are awaiting a green signal from the BCCI to make themselves available for the upcoming tour.

India’s possible delay can be accounted for, as Pandya reportedly picked up another niggle which has left him doubtful for the series. Sundar is also being monitored closely and is yet to undergo the final set of assessments. India’s squad selection holds special importance as India are looking to bounce back in the format after series defeats to Ireland and England.

The squad for the Afghanistan series is most likely to be distributed between the Asian Games contingent and the ODI squad for the West Indies series, which follow the Afghanistan T20Is.

Where will be the Afghanistan T20Is hosted?

The three-match T20I assignment will be hosted at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Who will lead the Indian side for the Afghanistan T20Is?

Shreyas Iyer, the Indian T20I skipper, is likely to lead India against Afghanistan.
