Wriddhiman Saha is set to retire from international and domestic cricket at the end of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season.
India and Bengal wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha has announced his retirement from domestic and international cricket, confirming that the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season will be his last competition.
The 40-year-old who has 40 test caps and nine ODIs under his belt, will wind down a career that will have stretched 18 years by its conclusion.
Saha made his Bengal debut in 2007 and donned the India jersey for the first time in 2010. Except for two years, he played all his domestic career for Bengal.
Saha was with Tripura in the last two years in a player-mentor role and returned to Bengal following a meeting with former India skipper and Bengal legend Sourav Ganguly.
In his retirement note that he posted on social media, Wriddhiman Saha wrote, “After a cherished journey in cricket, this season will be my last. I’m honored to represent Bengal one final time, playing only in the Ranji Trophy before I retire. Let’s make this season one to remember!”
When was the last time Wriddhiman Saha played a test match for India?
Wriddhiman Saha played 40 tests for India, the last of which was in 2021 against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Although Saha was hailed as the best wicket-keeper in the 2010s in India, he couldn’t have a long test career owing to the presence of MS Dhoni first and then the emergence of Rishabh Pant. The Bengal stumper didn’t help his case either as he couldn’t make consistent contributions with the bat.
In 40 tests, he scored 1353 runs at an ordinary average of 29 with three centuries and six fifties.
Saha will not play in the domestic white-ball tournaments and is unlikely to put his name in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction after being released by Gujarat Titans, with whom he won the IPL 2022 title.
Saha has been part of all IPL seasons since 2008. He has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. He smashed a century for Punjab in the 2014 final, however, they lost to KKR.
