Indian Cricket Team opener Abhishek Sharma finished T20 World Cup 2026 on a high note by smacking a brutal half-century in the final against New Zealand. The left-handed batsman started the tournament with three ducks in a row in the league stage.
His batting woes continued in the Super 8 stage too except for the clash against Zimbabwe, where he smacked a fifty. However, he got out cheaply in the virtual quarter-final against West Indies and the semi-final against England.
In the crucial final against New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium on March 8, Abhishek gave a glimpse of his old self, slamming a 21-ball 52. Smacking six fours and three sixes, he gave a quick-fire start to India alongside Sanju Samson. The duo etched an opening stand of 98 runs.
At an average of 17.6, Abhishek piled up 141 runs in eight games in T20 World Cup 2026 with two half-centuries. He held a strike rate of 158.42 but lost his wicket for single digits in many games, failing to showcase his dominating batting.
Abhishek Sharma will play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026?
After his national commitments in T20 World Cup, Abhishek will pull up his socks for IPL 2026, which is scheduled to commence on March 28. The left-handed batsman will represent Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the tournament. Ahead of the next season, SRH retained Abhishek for INR 14 crore.
The opening batter has been part of the franchise since the last few seasons and has been retained over the years. In the last season, the 25-year-old did a wonderful job, hitting 439 runs in 14 games at an average of 33.77 and a strike rate of 193.39.
He finished as the second-highest run-scorer for the team after Heinrich Klaasen (487 runs) and also hammered his maiden century in the tournament. With Australia’s Travis Head, he forms a dominating opening pair for SRH.
