Which is the only team to win the IPL title after playing the Eliminator?

So far, only one team has managed to win the IPL trophy after playing the eliminator.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has reached its final stage. The playoffs of the tournament will begin on Thursday (29th May), and the final will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (2nd June).

The Qualifier 1 will see Punjab Kings (PBKS) locking horns with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Thursday. The game between the two table toppers will be held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.

The eliminator will be played between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday, May 30. The game between the two teams will be played at the same venue as that of Qualifier 1 in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

As per IPL’s format, both PBKS and RCB will get two chances to reach the final, while Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans will play a knockout match in the eliminator. Hence, to win the title, both teams need to win three games, which will be an uphill task.

Over the years, teams that play Qualifier 1 have won most titles. However, not many teams that have played the eliminator have won the IPL title. This has happened only once in history, and there is a possibility that it could happen this time too, especially considering the excellent form of Mumbai and Gujarat.

Which team has won the IPL after playing the Eliminator?

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are the only team in IPL’s history who have won the title after playing the Eliminator. The franchise achieved the feat during the 2016 edition under the leadership of David Warner.

SRH faced Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Eliminator at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The David Warner-led side won the game by 22 runs and then went on to face the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 2 of the tournament at the same venue.

Their final dance was against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. They were under pressure for the majority of the game but held their nerves in crunch situations and won the game by 8 runs.
