Anushka Sharma will play for Gujarat Giants in her debut WPL season.

Gujarat Giants have bought Anushka Sharma in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 mega auction for INR 45 Lakhs. The young and promising cricketer will be seen in action in her debut WPL season, playing for Gujarat Giants, who have built a squad from scratch.

Gujarat Giants had a remaining purse of INR 9 crores, the biggest after UP Warriorz, who had INR 14.50 Crores remaining in their purse. Giants have bought 16 players in the mega auction, and one of them is Anushka Sharma.

Who is Anushka Sharma?

Anushka Sharma plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket. The 22-year-old is an all-rounder who can contribute both with bat and ball. This multi-dimensional ability is one of the factors behind Gujarat spending INR 45 Lakhs for the youngster.

Anushka can hit the ball out of the park and is also a handy off-spinner who can bowl some important overs for the team. Her form in domestic cricket has been phenomenal recently. She has a List A batting average of 63.00 and had a tournament strike rate of 125.00 in the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal T20 Trophy held in October. 

Gujarat Giants were not the only team to bid for Anushka. The 2024 WPL Champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, were also in the fray. The bidding war was won by Gujarat in the end, outbidding Bengaluru’s bid of INR 40 Lakhs.

Gujarat Giants were primarily focused on bringing in new Indian talents in WPL 2026 auction

Gujarat Giants have snapped up some big overseas names in the auction, including the veteran New Zealander Sophie Devine and Georgia Wareham. But they have primarily focused on bringing in new Indian talent into the squad.

The franchise bought Bharti Fulmali back for INR 70 Lakhs in order to keep the core of the team. They have also added the World Cup winner, Renuka Singh, to their roster for INR 60 Lakhs. This Indian contingent will play its role besides the overseas stars like Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney, and Sophie Devine.
