Emilio Gay debuted for England in first Test against New Zealand.

England vs New Zealand Test series is underway. The first of the three Tests is taking place at Lord’s, London. Ben Stokes is leading England, while Tom Latham is the skipper for the Kiwis.

Emilio Gay and Sonny Baker were the new additions in the England side ahead of the Test, while New Zealand included uncapped all-rounder Nathan Smith in the Test side.

Few notable misses from the English squad were that of Zak Crawley and Jofra Archer. While Jofra has been rested for the Test series after an illustrious season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Crawley has been dropped from the side due to poor performances.

Emilio Gay has earned his spot in the squad in place of Zak Crawley. He debuted for England on June 4 against New Zealand. Although, he failed to make a mark in first innings but he proved his worth in second innings, hitting a sublime half-century.

The 26-year batsman comes from Bedford, being born and raised there. He got involved in the Northamptonshire’s academy programme at under-15 level, and was named their Player of the Year in 2018.

In domestic cricket, he made his First Class debut in 2019, and since then has scored 4700 runs in 73 matches averaging just below 40. His List A debut was in 2021 for Northamptonshire, and has played 38 matches scoring 1182 runs.

In 2025, Gay was named in the England Lions squad for a two-match series against India A. He scored 46 in the first match, a 71 & 5 in the second match of the series.

After a good start to the 2026 domestic season, Gay made his debut for the England team in the opening test of the series against the Kiwis on 4 June 2026. He made eight in England’s first innings, before top-scoring with 57 in their second time at bat.

England are likely on their way for a convincing win against the Black Caps. New Zealand are currently ranked second on the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points table, while England are at seven.
