Shubman Gill has been named as the new test captain of Indian Cricket Team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday, May 24, announced India’s squad for the upcoming test series against England. BCCI also revealed the new test captain and new test vice-captain of the Indian Cricket Team.

Shubman Gill has been named as the new skipper of India in tests. Former test skipper Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format earlier this month. Sharma will continue to lead the ODI team. Hence, Indian Team needed a strong captain for the England test series and the selectors have chosen Gill to take the reins of the test side.

Notably, Gill is also the vice-captain of the team in ODIs. He was considered as front-runner to be picked as the new test skipper since Rohit’s retirement. Notably, Bumrah was vice-captain of the test side under Sharma’s captaincy. He also led the team in two test matches against Australia in India’s last series, but now he has not been named as vice-captain of the side for England tour.

Who is India’s new test vice-captain?

The BCCI has picked a new vice-captain for India in tests. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has been nominated as the new test vice-captain of Indian Cricket Team. Pant has been a regular member of the test team for the last few years barring the one year where he was ruled out following his car crash.

Pant gets a big credit for India’s historic victory during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 in Australia. He played a key role with the bat in the final test at the Gabba to drive the team to victory. Pant has been the first-choice wicket-keeper for India in tests since then.

The left-handed batsman has played 43 tests. He has mustered 2948 runs across 75 innings at a decent average of 42.11. He has also slammed six centuries and 15 half-centuries in the longest format, including a top knock of 159.

Meanwhile, Indian Cricket Team will clash with England in five tests starting next month. The first test will begin on June 20 at Headingley, leeds. The series will conclude in the first week of August with the final test. India have not won a test series in England since 2007.
