The auctions for the Women’s Premier League and Indian Premier League are all set to take place in the coming weeks. The auction for the second season of the WPL will take place on Saturday (December 9) from 3 p.m. onwards. The focus will be on the five WPL franchises that are keen to sign some good players for their teams for the upcoming season. Some big names in the women’s cricket will come under the hammer.

As the excitement grows for the auction, there will also be someone who will have the responsibility for the smooth operation of the auction. It will be none other than the WPL auctioneer, Mallika Sagar. She was also in auction for the inaugural season of the league and will be back on duty one more time.

Who is Mallika Sagar, The Auctioneer for the WPL?

Mallika is a Mumbai-based art collector. The 48-year-old became the first Indian to conduct the auction when she was part of the Women’s Premier League 2023 as an auctioneer. Mallika has been working as an auctioneer for almost 20 years now and started her journey back in 2001. She was also an integral part of the Pro Kabaddi League back in 2021.

According to some media reports, she is likely to replace IPL auctioneer Hugh Edmeades at the IPL 2024 auction to be held on December 19 in Dubai, UAE. Speaking of the upcoming WPL 2024 auction, a total of 165 women’s cricketers have registered for the auction. There are 104 Indian players, and 64 of them are overseas, including 15 from associate nations.

Five WPL teams: Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Royal Challengers will bid to fill the slots of 30 players. The Giants will enter the event with a purse value of INR 5.95 crore. The Delhi-based franchise have three slots to fill with a remaining amount of INR 2.25 crore. A few big names—Annabel Sutherland, Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, and Amy Jones—that can fetch big money will also be available to be picked.
