Manav Suthar debuted for India in the one-off Test against Afghanistan.
The one-off Test between India and Afghanistan is underway in New Chandigarh. Shubman Gill-led India are playing a red-ball game after a prolonged white-ball season in international cricket and the IPL 2026.
Ahead of the match, India handed Test cap number 319 to Manav Suthar; Kuldeep Yadav welcomed him to the team by presenting him with the cap. What has followed since has been a dream debut for the youngster with a six-wicket haul in his first outing.
Batting first, India posted a mammoth total of 564 runs in the first innings, thanks to Suthar’s quickfire knock of 28 runs off 41 balls. His innings included two sixes, showcasing his batting ability. He has found a spot in the team not just as a spinner, but also for his batting credentials.
Manav’s journey to reach India whites
He first caught the selectors’ eye in his breakthrough 2022-23 Ranji season, where he picked 39 wickets in 6 matches for Rajasthan. Following that, he was picked for India A.
In his first outing for India A against Australia A in 2025, he picked a five-wicket haul in the first innings and a three-wicket haul in the second. He was the highest wicket-taker in that match. Later, he also featured in the unofficial Test against South Africa A, where he had significant all-round contributions.
Even in the recently concluded Ranji season, his lethal spell of 8-42 against Chhattisgarh got him on the radar of the selectors. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he plays for the Gujarat Titans. He debuted for them in 2024 but was restricted to a lone appearance. In IPL 2026, he played four matches for the franchise, picking two wickets.
Eventually, the young boy from Rajasthan was selected in the Indian Test team for a one-off Test against Afghanistan and also made his debut. In his early years, Rahul Dravid, one of India’s finest cricketers, was impressed by his all-round abilities, but advised him to concentrate more on his bowling to have a long and successful career.
Manav’s ability to move the ball with speed has been commendable and is the main reason for his success. His disciplined, traditional bowling lines and consistency have caught the attention of many.
Although there are reports that he may be selected for India’s tour of Sri Lanka, where India will play a two-match Test series against the host nation, Suthar has not been included in the Indian A team for the multi-day matches to be played in Sri Lanka before that series.
