Nikhil Chaudhary could become the first India-born player to represent Australia in over 60 years.

Australia are touring Bangladesh for a white-ball series comprising three ODIs and three T20Is. The ODI series is currently underway, and T20I matches will be played after this on June 17, 19, and 21; all in Chattogram.

Mitchell Marsh will lead the side. However, he was not available for the ODI series due to an ankle injury. Travis Head and Tim David are set to miss the T20Is, while the Aussie pace-trio has been rested for the white-ball tours due to the upcoming Test schedule.

Cricket Australia has announced Nikhil Chaudhary as the replacement for Travis Head for the T20I series against Bangladesh. Head will miss the white-ball tour due to “personal leave”.

The Delhi-born cricketer has played for the Punjab domestic team in his U19 and U22 days, sharing the dressing room with cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma.

Chaudhary played 14 matches for Punjab between 2017 and 2019, including 12 T20 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (inter-state) and two List-A matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The 30-year-old’s journey for Cricket Australia was circumstantial. During COVID-19, he had visited his uncle in Queensland, but travel restrictions extended his stay. Eventually, this opened up opportunities for him to pursue cricket in Australia.

He had a brilliant season for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL) last summer, scoring 307 runs at an average of 30.7 and a strike rate of over 150. He played a pivotal role in helping the team win the title.

Eventually, he also secured his first Tasmania state contract after his debut Sheffield Shield season. His century against New South Wales and five-wicket haul against Queensland grabbed the attention of the selectors.

Ironically, despite being born in the spin-friendly conditions of India, Chaudhary enjoys hitting pace bowling more than spin. In the recent BBL season, he struck at above 180 against pace, while found spin fairly tougher.

Despite not having Australian citizenship, he has permanent residency and meets the International Cricket Council’s requirements to represent the Australian cricket team.

Australian chief selector, Tony Dodemaide, had his eye on this batting all-rounder for some time. “Nikhil has been a player of national interest for some time. He was a standby player for this tour, joining the squad at pre-season camps in Brisbane and comes in as a replacement for Travis Head.”

He added, “The panel has been impressed by his BBL form, particularly last season, leading to his addition to the squad. He has also been part of the Delhi Capitals setup in this year’s IPL.”

Tony has asserted that Nikhil will be in contention for the first game against Bangladesh when they pick the playing XI, and is certain that he will gain invaluable experience in Bangladesh.

If Nikhil Chaudhary plays the match against Bangladesh, it will make him the first Indian-origin player to debut for Australia in international cricket, after six decades.
