Oliver Tewatiya ‘Ollie’ has been picked in New Zealand U19 squad for the U19 World Cup 2024 in South Africa.

New Zealand U19 team are marking their return to the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 in South Africa. They missed the previous season of the U19 World Cup in West Indies due to strict Covid restrictions in the tournament. New Zealand are yet to win their maiden U19 World Cup title in history. Kiwis have decided to bring in South Asian power into their camp and added three South Asian origin players in their camp.

New Zealand have played only one final in the history of the U19 World Cup but they failed to place their hands on the prestigious trophy. New Zealand have picked Afghanistan origin Rahman Hekmat and two Indian origin players Snehith Reddy and Oliver Tewatiya. Fondly called ‘Ollie”, Oliver Tewatiya is ready to play a big part in the upcoming mega youth event.

Who is Oliver Tewatiya?

All-rounder Oliver Tewatiya fell in love with the game of cricket when he was in Delhi. Tewatiya’s family moved to Auckland when he was 10 years old. In the last 8 years, Oliver Tewatiya made big strides and landed into New Zealand’s U19 squad for the upcoming U19 World Cup. Oliver Tewatiya revealed in a chat with a local news portal in New Zealand that he fell in love with the game when he played street cricket with kids in Delhi.

Oliver Tewatiya had to shift his base once again in his life when his family moved to Wellington from Auckland. Tewatiya’s big opportunities in the game came in Wellington. Tewatiya found out a few kids playing the game in a ground right next to his house in Wellington. He inquired about the club from those kids and also joined the same club.

Oliver Tewatiya looks at Rachin Ravindra as his role model. Ravindra was born and brought up in Wellington. New Zealand is placed in group D along with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nepal. New Zealand will play their opening game against Nepal at Buffalo Park in East London.
