4 Indians have won a grand slam title
The Grand Slam tournaments are the most prestigious and important events in tennis. They are held every year, with two on hard courts, one on clay, and one on grass. The first Grand Slam of the year is the Australian Open in January, followed by the French Open on clay in late May. The third Grand Slam is Wimbledon on grass in July, and the last one is the US Open on hard courts in late August.
India has a rich history of doubles success in the Grand Slams. Four Indian players have won at least one Grand Slam title in tennis. They are Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupati, Sania Mirza, and Rohan Bopanna. India has also produced many tennis players who have gained international fame and competed in some of the top tennis tournaments
Let us look at the players who have won a Grand Slam title.
Leander Paes
A retired tennis pro, Leander has earned many honors for his nation. He has the most double victories in the history of the Davis Cup. He is also one of the world’s best double players and an Olympic bronze medalist. He beat Fernando Meligeni in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics to get his country’s first tennis Olympic medal. He and his fellow countryman Mahesh Bhupati won their first grand slam at the French Open in 1999. They bounced back from a disappointment at the Australian Open in 1998 and performed well in France to clinch the title
Mahesh Bhupati
As a doubles specialist in tennis, Mahesh reached the top of the world rankings. He and his partner dominated the doubles circuit for many years. He made history by becoming the first Indian to win a grand slam trophy when he and Rika Hiraki triumphed in the mixed doubles final of the 1997 French Open. He narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he finished fourth.
Sania Mirza
Sania Mirza, the Indian tennis star, was the first woman from India to win a grand slam. She was the only Indian woman to break into the top 100 in singles rankings and one of the two women to clinch a WTA title. She reached her highest singles ranking of 27 and made it to the fourth round of the US Open 2005.She and Mahesh Bhupati teamed up to win the mixed doubles title at the 2009 Australia Open, her first grand slam trophy. Her legendary partnership with Martina Hingis resulted in 14 titles in 16 months.

Rohan Bopanna
Rohan Bopanna, the latest grand slam champion from India, is still going strong at 43 years old and has climbed to the top of the doubles rankings with his partner Matthew Ebden. The duo achieved their best ranking of WR 1 after overcoming many challenges. Bopanna’s maiden grand slam trophy was the 2017 French Open mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski. He also had several runner-up finishes in the grand slam finals. He reached the ATP finals twice and was the second-best in 2012 and 2015. He and Sania Mirza narrowly missed a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, ending up in 4th place.
