Suryakumar Yadav led Indian Cricket Team to the title in the T20 World Cup 2026 in March. Although, he has a spectacular win record for India in the shortest format as a captain, he has struggled with his batting for a long time.
In the T20 World Cup, he scored 242 runs in nine innings, including an 84-run knock against the USA. Except for that match, Suryakumar struggled to come up with a match-winning knocks in any other games.
Yadav’s poor form has continued in the ongoing IPL 2026 for Mumbai Indians (MI). Across 10 games, he has scored 195 runs at a poor average of 19.50, scoring just one half-century.
According to reports, Indian selectors are looking forward to a change in leadership of the T20I side amid Surya’s struggles. Ahead of the England and Ireland series, the BCCI selectors will take a discussion on whether to retain Surya as T20I captain or pick a new captain.
Sanju Samson frontrunner to become next T20I captain of India- Reports
As per a report by Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagran, Sanju Samson could become India’s new T20I captain if Yadav steps aside. Moreover, if selectors retain Yadav as the captain, Samson would be named as the new vice-captain.
Samson impressed with his performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, finishing as India’s highest run-scorer. He was also adjudged Player of the Tournament and hammered match-winning half-centuries in the semi-final and the final. Playing for CSK in IPL 2026, he also has slammed two centuries.
Earlier, there were reports that selectors are looking at Shreyas Iyer as India’s next T20I captain. However, they are not in favour of giving captaincy to Iyer as he has not been in the T20I setup for a long time.
Notably, Iyer has impressed many with his leadership of Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. Last year, he led the team to the final, where they ended up as runners-up. This season, Punjab have been one of the dominating sides and were undefeated in their first seven games.
