BCCI announced the India squad for Asian Games 2026 on Saturday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) surprised many on Saturday after announcing a significantly stronger squad than expected for the Asian Games 2026. Unlike previous editions, where the tournament was largely used to test reserve players, the latest selection reflected a far more aggressive approach from the selectors.

India’s squad composition immediately sparked discussion because several regular international names were included despite a packed cricketing calendar ahead. The move also marked a noticeable departure from the board’s strategy during the 2023 Asian Games, when a second-string side was sent to Hangzhou while senior players remained engaged in other assignments.

The latest squad announcement also confirmed Shreyas Iyer as captain in T20Is, while Tilak Varma was named vice-captain, and teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earned a place in the side after his breakthrough IPL 2026 season. The inclusion of frontline players and emerging stars highlighted the importance being attached to the event by the selectors and team management.

According to Sports Journalist Abhishek Tripathi of Dainik Jagran, the BCCI’s decision was influenced by the possibility of facing a strong Pakistan side during the tournament.

As per the reports the BCCI “did not want to take any risk of losing to Pakistan,” leading to changes in the initial long list before the final squad announcement. It is learned that Pakistan was planning to send a competitive squad for the event, forcing India to rethink their traditional approach of fielding a second-tier side at the Asian Games.

The report also claimed that cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics played a role in the decision-making process, with the board viewing the Asian Games as a significant tournament rather than a secondary assignment.

The selection strategy differed sharply from the previous Asian Games campaign in Hangzhou, where India rested most of their senior stars but still secured the gold medal. This time, the inclusion of frontline players indicated that the board was unwilling to treat the tournament as merely developmental.

India and Pakistan remain among the biggest rivalries in international cricket, with every meeting between the two sides attracting massive global attention. Since bilateral cricket remains suspended, ICC and continental tournaments continue to be the only stages where the two teams face each other regularly.

The Men’s cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games is scheduled to begin on September 24, with the final set for October 3 in Japan.
