Gurnoor Brar picked two wickets in the ENG vs IND 1st ODI.

India have gained a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against England. They defeated them by six wickets in the opening game, chasing down a 259-run target with ease.

In the first innings, pacer Gurnoor Brar gave big breakthroughs to the Men in Blue at the start. The right-arm pacer dismissed both England openers in quick succession in the 13th over.

Although he proved expensive, conceding 61 runs in his nine-over spell, he played a crucial role in helping India prevent England from reaching a massive score. The 26-year-old also sustained an issue with his calf towards the end of the 1st innings. As a result, he could not bowl the last over of his spell and left the field with the team physio.

Ahead of the second game on July 16, Brar has found himself in a bit of controversy after being charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct.

Gurnoor Brar has been warned for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against England in Birmingham on July 14.

Gurnoor was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”

Additionally, a demerit point has been added to Brar’s disciplinary record; this was his first offence in 24 months.

The incident occurred in the 8th over of England’s innings, when Brar picked up the ball while bowling and threw it towards the batter in an inappropriate and dangerous manner.

In the fifth delivery of the 8th over, Brar bowled a full-length delivery outside off to Ben Duckett. The England opener leaned across and played a drive back at the bowler. Gurnoor collected the ball and then threw it back at Duckett, missing him by a whisker.

Brar admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, third umpire Sam Nogajski, and fourth official Russell Warren levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Meanwhile, the 2nd ODI between England and India will take place on July 16 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The Shubman Gill & Co. will aim for a series victory with a win in the match.

Why was Gurnoor Brar handed one demerit point?

The ICC has handed Brar a demerit point for aggressive behaviour towards England opener Ben Duckett. He threw the ball towards him during the ENG vs IND 1st ODI at Edgbaston.
