India and Afghanistan are locking horns in a one-off test match, the second between the two sides. The encounter got underway on June 6.
Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bat first. India have gained a good dominance over Afghanistan in the first innings. On day 1, India piled up a commanding total of 368/3.
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill have scored centuries, while Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant have hit fifties. India are en route to a big total in the first innings. After the first session on Day 2, Shubman Gill & Co. crossed 400 runs on the board.
Why is IND vs AFG test not part of ICC World Test Championship 2025-27

Notably, the IND vs AFG one-off test is not part of ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Afghanistan are not among the teams participating in the tournament. Hence, the result of the match will have no effect on India’s WTC rankings and win percentage.
The nine teams part of the WTC 2025-27 are Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, England, Pakistan, and West Indies. India are currently placed in the sixth spot in the points table with four wins, four defeats, and one draw across nine tests. They have a win percentage of 48.15.
Although the test match against Afghanistan is not part of the WTC cycle, it will help India to prepare for the crucial forthcoming test series. India’s next assignment in WTC will be against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Next year in January, India will host Australia for five tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
