Jasprit Bumrah has been kept out of the ODI series to manage his workload ahead of the upcoming Test matches against New Zealand. The Indian team management wants the senior fast bowler to remain fit and ready for the longer format.
With the first Test scheduled to begin just four days after the ODI series ends on November 15, India have decided to prioritise their Test preparations. Bumrah is expected to return to India’s bowling attack for the Test series.
India captain Shubman Gill explained that the tight schedule between the two formats has forced the team to rest some players from the final ODIs.
“Both formats are important. Unfortunately, because we are playing the ODIs in between, some of the players who are part of the Test team will have to miss the last two ODIs,” Gill said ahead of the first match.
Gill also stated that he would have preferred to play the full squad in all five ODIs if there had been a longer break between the two series.
Bumrah’s absence means Mohammed Siraj will have a bigger responsibility in India’s pace attack. Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar are also expected to play important roles, while the other fast bowlers will look to make the most of their opportunities.
