Why is Jofra Archer not playing ENG vs IND 1st T20I in Chester-le-Street?

Jofra Archer is England’s key pacer.
India’s tour of England in 2026 began on July 1 (Wednesday) with the first T20I match between the two teams. India and England are scheduled to lock horns in five T20I matches, followed by three ODIs.
The venue of the ENG vs IND 1st T20I is Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. While Shreyas Iyer is captaining India, Harry Brook has the reins of England. The Men in Blue recently lost a T20I series against Ireland and aim for a comeback against the English Team.
In the 1st T20I, India won the toss and chose to BAT first. Notably, pacer Jofra Archer is not part of England‘s playing XI.
The hosts revealed their playing XI a few hours ahead of the match, a norm they have followed over the last few years. Archer is a crucial pacer in their squad, who also featured in the recent Test series against New Zealand.
Why is Jofra Archer absent from ENG vs IND 1st T20I?

Notably, the England management has rested Archer in the clash to manage his workload. The right-arm pacer represents the side across all three formats and has suffered severe injuries in the past. He was also out of the field for more than a year due to his injuries and has undergone surgeries.
Archer is known to be an injury-prone player, so managing his workload has become a crucial factor for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood will lead England’s pace attack in the 1st T20I.
The right-arm pacer featured in two tests against New Zealand last month, clinching a total of 11 wickets. Before that, he was part of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026, where he rocked with his excellent bowling show. Since the start of this year, Archer has taken 13 wickets in 10 games at an economy of 9.45.
