India and West Indies have started their three-match ODI series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27. The series is important for both teams to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Shubman Gill won the toss and decided to bowl first against the West Indies. India have also handed an ODI debut to Naman Dhir as they look to test different players and combinations.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are back in the ODI setup, while India have gone with four bowlers and two all-rounders for the first match. However, Mohammed Siraj has missed out from the playing XI.

The decision also gives India an opportunity to assess other players and combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. With a long ODI season ahead, India could rotate their bowlers and give different players opportunities.
Siraj’s omission from the first ODI does not necessarily mean he will miss the entire series. India still have two matches against West Indies, and his return could depend on the team’s combination, workload and requirements.
