Mumbai Indians bought Quinton de Kock at his base price during the IPL 2026 auction.
Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) will see the Mumbai Indians taking on the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Both teams kicked off their respective seasons with a win, albeit in contrasting ways.
MI faced a tough job with the ball in the first innings, but a new hero emerged for them in the opening match, Shardul Thakur. Jasprit Bumrah ensured KKR did not score in excess of 230, while Trent Boult managed to do a decent job for his team in the death overs.
In reply, Rohit Sharma got his team off to a superb start. Ryan Rickelton continued the momentum, as the pair laid the perfect foundation for the chase. Despite a stumble in the end, the Mumbai Indians managed to get the job done and mark their first opening-match win in an IPL season since 2012.

Notably, de Kock was again absent from MI’s playing XI against DC. MI went ahead with Rohit and Rickelton as openers once again. MI have been gifted with eight sensational overseas options.
At the top of the order, MI had to make a tough call: they could play only one of Quinton de Kock or Ryan Rickelton. Against KKR, they opted for Rickelton, a decision that paid them handsomely.
The young left-hander repaid the trust and faith shown in him with a match-winning knock of 81 runs from just 43 balls, smashing 8 sixes and 4 fours. Ryan has now cemented his position at the top, continuing his good work from last season, and his selection for the match against the Capitals was a no-brainer.
Quinton de Kock returned to the Mumbai Indians colours after winning two consecutive IPL seasons in 2019 and 2020. The left-hander’s contribution at the top alongside Rohit Sharma was instrumental, as both had different styles but complemented each other perfectly.
MI looked to bring that combination back this year. However, it was Rickelton who got the nod as the opener for the ongoing IPL 2026 clash, and his good outings mean that the Sharma-Rickelton combination will continue for a while at this IPL.
“At the same point of time, Rickelton was brilliant. And to see that, very nice. (On picking Rickelton over Quinton de Kock) Ryan has done really well for this franchise. Even last year, he’s been fantastic.
Quinny is a top man, he understood, he knew we are backing the player with the continuity and at the same point of time, so well he did”, said captain Hardik Pandya at the post-match presentation after the win against KKR.
De Kock will have to wait for his chance, but it remains unlikely that he will return to the playing XI any time soon.
