Quinton de Kock was bought by Mumbai Indians at his base price during IPL 2026 auction.

Match 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will see one unwanted record for either teams end today. Two of the most successful franchises in Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) begin their respective campaigns today at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Hardik Pandya won the all-important toss and chose to bowl with zero hesitation. MI have not won their opening match in IPL since 2012, while KKR hold a mediocre record at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Hence it will be all to play for both sides, as starting the season on a positive note is crucial for the team’s morale and confidence.

Mumbai Indians have been gifted with eight sensational overseas options. However, two were unavailable for today’s clash in Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner. At the top of the order, MI were forced to take a tough call as they could play only one of Quinton de Kock or Ryan Rickelton.

Quinton de Kock is marking his return to the team, with which he won two consecutive IPL seasons in 2019 and 2020. The left-hander’s contribution at the top alongside Rohit Sharma was instrumental, as both had different styles but complemented perfectly.

MI looked to bring that combination back this year, however it was Rickelton who got the nod as the opener for ongoing IPL 2026 clash. Ryan played nearly all group-stage matches last year for MI, and had a decent debut season.

According to visuals prior to the start of the match, de Kock was seen running at half pace from one end to the other. He was seen alongside MI’s fitness and physio too, and did not practice wicketkeeping unlike Rickelton. Hence a physical fitness issue too may also have influenced de Kock’s omission.
