Why did Ravindra Jadeja miss IND vs AFG 1st ODI in Dharamsala?

Ravindra Jadeja was not selected in the Indian squad for the IND vs AFG ODI series.
India are set to clash with Afghanistan in their first-ever bilateral ODI series starting June 13 at Dharamshala. India last played an ODI match in January and return to the 50-over format after an elaborate T20 calendar.
Shubman Gill will lead the side, with Shreyas Iyer as his deputy. The Men in Blue will begin their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup with this very series. Young guns Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey have earned their maiden ODI call-ups ahead of this series.
Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya are set to miss the series due to their hamstring and quadriceps injuries, respectively. Meanwhile, the BCCI has announced Yashasvi Jaiswal as Kohli’s replacement.
Some star players are not part of this series, and Ravindra Jadeja is one of them. Let’s take a look at the reason behind his exclusion.
Why is Ravindra Jadeja not playing the 1st ODI?
The left-arm spin all-rounder last featured in the Indian Premier League 2026, playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR). RR’s journey in this IPL was limited to the Qualifier 2.
Jadeja was visibly under immense pain due to a recurrence of a tennis elbow injury, and had also missed two fixtures in the season. He scored 266 runs and picked 14 wickets in 14 matches.
In the Qualifier 2, his injury flared up and forced him to retire hurt in the middle of the innings. However, he did return to bat later, with a heavily strapped left elbow. Jadeja also missed the one-off Test against Afghanistan and was not selected for the ODIs.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, addressing the same, said, “With regards to one-day cricket, again, with 15-16 months left to that World Cup, somewhere around there we want to obviously try and assess what our options are, particularly keeping in mind the conditions in South Africa and give a little bit of exposure to some of the newer guys.”
Jadeja last featured in international cricket in the ODIs against New Zealand earlier this year, where he scored 43 runs and went wicketless in three matches.
