Explained: Why Rishabh Pant was fined 12 lakhs after DC defeated CSK in Vizag

Rishabh Pant returned to cricket field after 14 months and is captaining DC in IPL 2024.
Delhi Capitals (DC) recorded their first win of the IPL 2024, as they bettered Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Vizag on Sunday by 20 runs. It was a brilliant all-round showing by DC at their adopted home at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
DC had opted to bat first and scored 191/5 in 20 overs, thanks to fifties from David Warner and Rishabh Pant. Matheesha Pathirana picked 3/31 for CSK.
In response, CSK’s openers failed for the first time in the competition, and despite efforts by Ajinkya Rahane (45) and Daryl Mitchell (34) to pull CSK back into the game, the asking rate proved too high. However, in the death overs, Ravindra Jadeja with 21* and MS Dhoni with 37* in 16 balls put on a show for the spectators.
Dhoni, in particular, was outstanding, hitting four fours and three sixes in his effort as CSK finished 171/6 and lost by 20 runs. Pant had a decent outing with the bat as he helped DC cease their 2-match losing streak.
DC captain Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs for a slow overrate fine
Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant has been fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over rate during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai on Sunday. Pant became the second skipper after Gujarat’s Shubman Gill to be fined for slow over rate in the ongoing edition.
The GT captain Shubman Gill was also fined during a match against CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
“Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on March 31,” an IPL press release read.
Pant must exercise caution because two further infractions will result in a one-match ban. Because it was Pant’s first infraction, his DC colleagues were not penalized.
In the event of a second infringement, the captain of a team is penalized Rs 24 lakh, while the remaining members, including the Impact Sub, are punished either Rs 6 lakhs or 25% of their match fees, whichever is less.
In the event of a third offense, the bowling team leader faces a fine of INR 30 lakh and a one-match suspension. The other players in the team are fined 50% of their match fees or Rs 12 lakh each, whichever is less.
