Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are front-runners for ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is just two months away. It will start on June 2 in USA and the Caribbean Islands. 20 teams will feature in this ICC event, and the deadline to announce the squad is the first week of May. The Indian selection committee is keeping an eye on the performances in the ongoing IPL 2024.

There will be some headaches for different positions from top to bottom. However, there will be a race for the first-choice wicket-keeper between Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant. Though there are some other options as well but these two are doing well in the IPL 2024. But who will get an edge? Here we will talk about three reasons why Pant might get past Samson.

Here are the three reasons why Rishabh Pant might get selected over Sanju Samson for T20 World Cup 2024

1. Option in middle-order

Rishabh Pant is currently batting at No. 4 for Delhi Capitals, but he bats at No. 5 or 6 for the Indian team, which gives the team a left-handed option in the middle-order. Meanwhile, Samson is a top-order batter. India already have Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav at the top, and they might need a batter to bat down the order, and Pant is used to batting at these numbers. Furthermore, he also gives India a left-handed option in the middle.

2. More international experience

Rishabh Pant was part of the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia and played a couple of matches. Furthermore, he has more international experience than Samson. Pant has played 66 T20Is as compared to 25 T20Is for Samson. Hence, Pant might get an edge in this selection criteria. However, his numbers in the shortest format aren’t as per his standards, but he has won games in other formats on his own.

3. Backing from team management

Performance and stats do matter, but the most important thing in a selection is the backing from the team management. Samson made his debut in 2015 but has played only 25 T20Is, and Pant has played almost three times more than him, which indicates that the Indian management certainly backs the left-hander more. And why not? He has been a match-winner for India and has played some heroic innings in the past. That is one strong reason that he will be the front runner as a keeper batter.
