Shreyas Iyer might return for the T20I series against the West Indies in October 2026.

When India play the three-match ODI series against West Indies, Shreyas Iyer’s absence will be a topic of discussion. The middle-order batter established himself as one of India‘s most important players in the format and was also named the vice-captain of the side.

As India begin preparations for the 2027 ICC World Cup, Shreyas’s experience will prove invaluable during this assessment phase.

Shreyas Iyer has also been handed the captaincy in the shortest format of the game. Therefore, India’s schedule has created an unusual situation within the team.

Shreyas Iyer will miss the ODI series against the West Indies because it clashes with the 2026 Asian Games. Iyer is set to lead the Indian contingent at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India will enter the competition directly in the knockouts and will play their first match on September 28.

The Indian contingent is likely to reach Japan by 22nd September, while the West Indies series begins on the 27th of September in India. Hence, the BCCI and selectors will have to divide their resources between the two major competitions.

Moreover, if India qualify for the Asian Games medal matches, then India’s ODI and T20I side will play a match on the same day in two different countries. India are the defending champions of the Asian Games Cricket Championship.

Hence, Iyer’s absence will allow another batsman to cement his place in the ODI middle order. It might be a suitable opportunity for selectors to assess India’s depth ahead of the marquee 50-over tournament in 2027.

This also means that Indian players such as Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and several others—who are part of the squad travelling to Japan—are likely to miss the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies.

Hence, it is now clear that rather than being sidelined due to injuries or form, the right-handed batter has been sidelined due to a completely different challenge. The decision to have Iyer for the Asian Games instead of an international ODI series highlights the importance of the Asian Games to India.
