Shubman Gill has shown impeccable leadership skills in the Indian Premier League 2026, driving the Gujarat Titans (GT) to the final. GT will clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the summit clash on May 31.
Gill has led GT’s batting from the front and is the leading run-scorer for his team. The right-handed batsman has scored 722 runs in 15 games at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 160+. He has hammered one century and six fifties in the tournament.
Gill helped the Gujarat Titans to get blistering starts in many games and also played match-winning knocks on a few occasions. However, despite his brilliant batting show in IPL 2026, he was overlooked for the Asian Games 2026.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently submitted the probables list for the Asian Games 2026 to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). However, Shubman Gill was not part of the list.
Why is Shubman Gill overlooked for the Asian Games 2026?
Notably, the Asian Games 2026 will be played from September 20 to October 4. It will clash with India’s white-ball series against the West Indies at home.
India will lock horns with West Indies in three ODIs and five T20Is from September 27 to October 17. Gill is the ODI captain of India and will lead the team in the ODI series. Hence, won’t be available for the Asian Games.
Moreover, the Asian Games will be played in the T20I format. Earlier this year, Gill lost his spot in the T20I team due to his dismal performance last year. He was also snubbed from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
With the Asian Games, selectors are also looking to form a core squad for the LA Olympics 2028. Since Gill is already out of the T20I setup currently, he must have been overlooked for the campaign.
