India management has coped a lot of criticism for not handing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his T20I debut.
India will return to action in the second T20I against England after the opening game in Durham ended without a result because of rain. The Men in Blue looked in a strong position after putting 189/7 on the scoreboard in 20 overs, but due to the bad weather, England didn’t get the chance to begin their chase.
Despite the washout, India had several positives to take from the first game after the disappointing loss in the Ireland series. Captain Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a decent inning of 68 runs, while Abhishek Sharma continued his fiery approach and played an impressive knock of 59 runs off 24 balls.
However, the debate has once again shifted towards the team selection ahead of the second T20I. Sanju Samson’s inconsistent form and poor run with the bat have continued, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is still waiting for his first opportunity in international cricket.
The youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been in the spotlight since his selection in India’s T20I squad. A lot of debates are going around about his position in the playing XI since India’s tour of Ireland, especially after his brilliant IPL 2026 campaign and impressive performance for India A.
India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel on Vaibhav’s debut in International cricket

During the pre-match post conference for the second ENG vs IND T20I, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel made it clear that the coaching staff believes in backing players who have already delivered performances for India.
He said that Abhishek Sharma is currently one of the best T20 batters in world cricket, while Sanju Samson played a major role in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign. According to Morkel, dropping players after just a few bad innings sends the wrong message to the rest of the squad.
“We also don’t want to bat players out of the position. It’s not as straightforward as saying, Let’s play him. It’s a matter of backing the guys who’ve won World Cups and done really well in tough situations,” Morkel said.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is ready whenever the opportunity arises
Morkel revealed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has settled into the dressing room quite fast and looked comfortable in the training sessions. He also admitted that everyone in the squad is excited about the youngster’s future in the Indian Team.
“He’s fitted in very, very well. At the international stage as a 15-year-old, it can be intimidating. But in the couple of net sessions we’ve had, he has been very impressive. When he gets an opportunity, I’m pretty sure he’ll be ready,” the bowling coach said.
However, Morkel also explained that India does not want to disrupt the batting order or push players into unfamiliar positions just to accommodate him. Therefore, Sooryavanshi still has to wait for his first international appearance for the Indian team.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play the second T20I against England?
India has not confirmed their playing XI, but Morne Morkel’s comments suggest the team is likely to continue backing the current top order.
When is the second T20I between India and England?
The second T20I will be played on July 04, 2026, at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester.
