Washington Sundar was part of Indian XI for the first two ENG vs IND ODIs.

England and India are playing the series decider on Sunday, July 19, at Lord’s. The series stands at 1-1, and this will be a high octane clash between the two sides.

India had won the first contest of the series, by 6 wickets, but lost the second one woefully by 4 wickets. Shubman Gill has been India’s highest run-scorer so far (111 runs), while, Axar Patel has picked the most wickets in the series so far (5 wickets).

As India brace themselves for this third ENG vs IND ODI, they made three changes to the side. Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, and Jasprit Bumrah miss out from the match; and have been replaced by KL Rahul, Prince Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh.

Washington Sundar had last featured in the 2nd ODI of the series, and scored only 2 runs in that match. He was visibly under pain and was struggling with his hamstring. He eventually gave away his wicket.

However, in the second innings, Sundar did not walk out to field, and India were short of a bowler in the side. Shortly after the match ended, it was confirmed that he has been ruled out of the third match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement saying, “Washington sustained a right hamstring injury during the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, and has been ruled out of the remainder of the series. He will undergo scans and seek a specialist opinion for further management of his injury.”

Furthermore, the Men’s Selection Committee named Harsh Dubey as Washington Sundar’s replacement for the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s.

Sundar had hit a match-winning half-century in the 1st ODI against England in Birmingham, alongside Axar Patel. He scored 52* off 63 balls. In the first innings, he had bowled four overs, at an economy of 3.4.

Sundar has been an integral part of India’s Test setup. India will be playing two Tests against Sri Lanka from August 15, and Sundar’s recovery will key for the team.
