Akeal Hosein’s five-wicket haul helped West Indies bowl Uganda out for only 39 runs in their defence of 173

West Indies recorded the second biggest victory in terms of margin of runs in men’s ICC T20 World Cup history when they defeated Uganda by 134 runs on Saturday night in Guyana.

After posting 173 runs on the board, West Indies bowled Uganda out for a paltry total of 39 runs, courtesy of a sensational spell from left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, who returned with bowling figures of 5/11.

Taking the new ball, Hosein got on a roll in his four-over spell and took his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is. All five of his wickets were among the top seven batters in Uganda’s batting line-up.

Hosein now holds the record for the best bowling figures by a West Indies bowler in men’s T20 World Cup. His 5/11 bettered the figures of 4/15 by former leg-spinner Samuel Badree, who achieved these figures against Bangladesh in Mirpur in the 2014 T20 World Cup.

Further, these are now the sixth-best bowling figures in men’s T20 World Cup history.

Akeal’s 5/11 are the second-best bowling figures by a West Indies bowler in all men’s T20Is.

Talking about the match, West Indies scored 173 runs, with Johnson Charles top-scoring for them with 44. Plenty of other batters played impactful cameos to take WI to 173. In the chase, Uganda had no answers to the West Indies bowlers and were bowled out for 39 in 12 overs. Only one Uganda batsman got into double figures.

Bagging the Man of the Match award, Akeal Hosein said, “I think I needed this. In the nets and in the previous series, I felt like the ball was coming out of my hand good. I think I was doing everything right in the nets but I just wasn’t getting the rewards. Just have to stay calm and it’ll be my turn soon.”
