India are currently busy with their white-ball cricket, while teams around the world already planning major bilateral series and ICC events over the next couple of months. At the same time, cricket boards are also looking at new ways to grow the game beyond their regional markets.
From overseas league matches to broadcasting, boards are trying different methods to attract more fans and make international cricket even bigger. India continue to play a major role in these plans because of its huge audience.
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) becoming one of the biggest cricket leagues in the world, many cricket boards are exploring opportunities to bring more such events to Indian fans.
One of the surprising ideas has emerged that cricket’s oldest rivalries, The Ashes, could one day be played on Indian soil after a major statement from Cricket Australia (CA).
Cricket Australia open to Ashes Test in India
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has revealed that the board is open to the possibility of pushing an Ashes Test match in India in the future if all stakeholders agree.
However, Greenberg also made it clear that there are no current plans to move an Ashes Test to India. He explained that the Idea is only open for discussion and would require approval from both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The Ashes has always been played only in England and Australia since the rivalry began in 1882, with the series alternating between the two countries every few years.
The discussion comes after Cricket Australia announced that a BBL match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will be played in Chennai later this year.
Can an Ashes Test really happen in India?
The proposal sounds good and exciting, but there will be several challenges before it can become a reality. The biggest hurdle is the already packed international cricket calendar, and finding space for an additional five-day Test will not be an easy task.
Another important factor is the Ashes tradition itself. The series has always been hosted only by Australia and England; moving even one Test away from those countries would be a major change and may not be welcomed by all fans.
Will the Ashes Test be played in India?
No. There are currently no confirmed plans to host an Ashes Test in India. Cricket Australia has only said it is open to discussing the idea in the Future.
