The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is once again at a crossroads and is facing a tough call regarding the management of the men’s selection committee. With the Indian Cricket team preparing for a tough phase of transition and preparation, the men’s selection committee will have a major role to play. India are entering the busiest phase of limited-overs action for the next few months.
Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar has been at the centre of India’s selection process since 2023 when he took over as the chairman of the men’s selection committee. His tenure coincided with a highly successful period in white-ball cricket, where India won the ICC T20 World Cup twice in 2024 and 2026 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. They also finished as the finalists of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

According to the latest reports by Aaj Tak journalist Nitin Kumar Srivastav, Agarkar’s tenure is set to come up for discussion with the BCCI, with the possibility of him continuing to serve as India’s chief selector beyond September 2026. He will complete three years of his tenure in September and is eligible for a year of extension.
The latest developments come amid a growing notion over whether the BCCI wants to continue with Agarkar in the role of Chief selector until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Some reports have indicated that the board has interest in retaining him for the role, while some have cast doubt over the extension of his tenure due to several controversial decisions during his three-year tenure.
Under Agarkar’s reign, players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their surprise retirement from the longest format of the game. It was the Agarkar-led committee that forced Indian greats like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to return to domestic action to retain an ODI spot.
The selection committee has also overseen several transitions in leadership, with Shubman Gill taking over as India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma being snubbed from ODI captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav winning a T20 World Cup and then being snubbed from captaincy in the shortest format of the game.
Hence, the decision is not entirely straightforward for the BCCI members, as India’s recent results across formats have raised concerns over the long-term combination. Some possible alternatives have also surfaced recently, which raised further uncertainty about his reappointment.
With September now approaching, the BCCI’s eventual decision could determine whether Agarkar will remain in charge or will be replaced ahead of the 2027 World Cup. However, the reports have favoured Agarkar’s retention.
