Ben Stokes has once again become a topic of discussion for the wrong reasons.

England were in action at Lord’s, playing the first of the three Tests against the Kiwis. The hosts won the match by a significant margin of 115 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Ollie Robinson, who was making a comeback in Tests, was the Player of the Match for his 5/39 & 2/38 in the two innings. Meanwhile, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, with their 7 and 5 wickets, respectively, made vital contributions. Harry Brook and the debutant Emilio Gay were the only batsmen who scored half-centuries in the match.

“I knew how big this game was in terms of the result and how it was going to be perceived externally if it didn’t go well, but now it’s gone well,” Stokes said. England had a rather underwhelming outing in the past few Test series, which made the captain say so.

On Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said that it is investigating an “incident” at a nightclub involving the England Captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson.

“The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place,” the board said in a statement.

However, their following statement added more fuel to the situation, where they said, “We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed, and we will provide a further update when possible.”

Because of this, discussions began regarding removing the captain from his position. In the post-match conversation with the media, Stokes said, “I probably won’t be really happy and smiling until I get up there and share a proper beer with the boys.”

Times of India has reported that Ben Stokes’ future as England Test captain is reportedly under serious threat after an alleged breach of team protocol. The England skipper is under investigation for the nightclub incident in Chelsea following England’s win over New Zealand at Lord’s, with reports suggesting he broke the team’s midnight curfew.

There has been no official confirmation yet regarding Ben Stokes’s captaincy and the punishment due to this incident.

However, this is not the first time this team is facing scrutiny for such an “incident”. Similar cases had also come to light in New Zealand and Australia. Harry Brook, England’s limited-overs captain, also faced an internal investigation and was reprimanded by the ECB.

The second Test between England and New Zealand is scheduled to start on June 17 at The Oval. England are ranked 7th on the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points table. Meanwhile, New Zealand are placed fourth after the recent defeat.
