MS Dhoni handed Ruturaj Gaikwad the CSK captaincy ahead of IPL 2024.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has opened up about his Indian Premier League (IPL) future, saying that he is waiting for the BCCI to finalise the retention rules before he takes a final call on his IPL career.

The IPL governing council met the franchise owners on July 31 at their headquarters in Mumbai. The main agenda of the meeting was how many players are to be retained.

Needs to be in the best interest of the team: MS Dhoni

Recently, Dhoni attended an event for a shoe company in Hyderabad where he answered a host of questions. One of them invariably was about his IPL future and whether the fans would get to see him play in IPL 2025.

The 43-year-old former CSK skipper outlined that he will make his decision after the retention rules are confirmed, and assured that whatever he decides, it will be keeping in mind the best interest of the team.

Dhoni said, “There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team.”

Dhoni had a phenomenal season with the bat this year. Coming in to bat mostly in the death overs, he whacked 13 sixes and 14 fours in the 73 balls he faced. His strike rate was a staggering 220, which is the first time his strike rate in an entire season was over 200. He was not out in eight of his 11 innings.

However, CSK, under new skipper Gaikwad, failed to qualify for the playoffs. They finished fifth with 14 points and were edged out by RCB.
