Dewald Brevis missed CSK’s opening match against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will play their first home match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Chepauk. Interestingly, PBKS have performed incredibly well against CSK in recent past, winning all three previous matches against the Yellow Army.

Moreover, PBKS have dominated and won the previous three matches at Chepauk, despite the ground being a fortress for CSK historically. The five-time winners will be eager to start off their home leg with a win and reassert their dominance on their home turf, as they failed to do so last year, which led to them finishing last on the points table for the first time ever in the league’s history.

This match will also mark Sanju Samson’s debut in Chennai as a CSK player, and he is certain to get plenty of support from the crowd who have long wanted him to play for their team. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre will also be hoping to bounce back after poor outings against RR.

Will Dewald Brevis play for CSK vs PBKS in IPL 2026?

Dewald Brevis is CSK’s go-to player in the middle-order. Having missed the clash against RR, CSK will be desperate to have him back in their ranks. His absence was dearly felt as the CSK batting lineup crumbled in the opening clash, with the side unable to post a competitive score. With MS Dhoni ruled out as well, the middle-order gets weakened.

Earlier, reports suggested Brevis could miss upto two or three matches. However, a positive sign emerged for CSK as the South African youngster looked comfortable while batting in the nets ahead of the PBKS match. He reportedly showed no signs of discomfort during practice, showing signs of a potential return.

Head coach Stephen Fleming had previously confirmed that Brevis missed the first game due to a side strain. The fact this is only the second match, and the IPL is a long competition, it is highly unlikely that the CSK management will rush Brevis into the playing XI.

He is likely to remain on the sidelines, and might potentially return for the next match if he regains complete fitness.
