Mumbai Indians (MI) will clash with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their opening game of Indian Premier League 2026. The MI vs KKR match will take place on March 29 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Jasprit Bumrah will hold key for MI in IPL 2026 and will lead their pace attack. Earlier this month, Bumrah gave a brilliant performance in T20 World Cup 2026. With 14 wickets at an economy of 6.21, he ended as the joint highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
He also picked a four-wicket haul in the final against New Zealand and was adjudged Player of the Match. Notably, Bumrah was given an extended break before joining the MI squad for IPL 2026.
Ahead of joining the MI camp on Friday, he also visited the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. He spent five days at the BCCI facility for monitoring his workload management and strength and conditioning checks.

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has clarified that Bumrah is completely fit and available for MI’s opening game against KKR. Bumrah missed the training sessions on Friday but participated on Saturday. Hence, he is highly likely to play in the opening game.
Last season, Bumrah missed the first four games. In 12 matches, he clinched 18 wickets in 12 games and finished as the second highest wicket-taker for his team. His absence at the start came as a big blow for Mumbai, as they lost three of those four games.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have never won their opening game in an IPL season since the 2012 edition. However, they have a formidable record against KKR at Wankhede Stadium, winning 10 matches out of 12 over the years.
