Jos Buttler has been out of action since the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

England and Australia are currently competing in a three-match T20I series, which stands 1-1 after two games. The third T20I will be played on Sunday in Manchester.

The T20I series will be followed by a five-match ODI series between cricket’s two oldest rivals. The five-ODI series will run from September 19 to September 29. This series is crucial for both teams as they prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025.

However, England could be without their captain, Jos Buttler, in the ODI series.

Will Jos Buttler play in the ODI series against Australia?

England captain Jos Buttler is in doubt for the five-match ODI series against Australia. Butter missed the T20I series against Mitchell Marsh’s side due to his right calf injury that has been troubling him for the past couple of months. Phil Salt led England in the T20I series in Buttler’s absence.

Although Buttler was named in the ODI squad, he is unlikely to feature in the series as England wouldn’t want to risk aggravating his injury by rushing him back to action.

Buttler has not played any level of cricket since England’s semi-final exit at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June. He sustained a calf injury in July while preparing for the Hundred, which he missed entirely.

He had targetted Lancashire’s T20 Blast quarter-final on September 4 to make a return but that plan didn’t come to fruition. He then failed to recover in time for the T20Is against Australia and is unlikely to feature in the ODIs as well.

The ECB had said in their statement, “This injury also places his participation in the Metro Bank ODIs later this month in doubt.”

In case Buttler misses out from the ODI series, Salt and Harry Brook are options to lead England. Brook was England’s vice-captain in the recent test series against Sri Lanka, where Ollie Pope led the side in the absence of the injured Ben Stokes.
