Mohammad Amir has acquired British citizenship.

Former Pakistan left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir has obtained British citizenship. He has received his British passport from the United Kingdom (UK), which grants him the official status of a British citizen.

Amir had applied for British citizenship a few years ago. His wife, Nargis Khan, is a British citizen, and this played a key role in his residency and citizenship process. He has completed all legal requirements to become a UK citizen.

Notably, Amir’s British citizenship has also opened doors for him to participate in the Indian Premier League. As you know, Pakistani players are not allowed to play in the tournament due to political tension between India and Pakistan.

However, since Amir has no formal connection as a Pakistan cricketer and will be considered a UK citizen, he is eligible to play in the IPL. He will now be considered under the overseas category.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood played for Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL even after the ban came into effect due to his British passport. Similarly, Pakistan-born Sikandar Raza has also played in the IPL. He represents Zimbabwe in international cricket.

With Amir officially becoming a British citizen, rumours are rife among fans that he will play in IPL 2027.

Having British citizenship, his legal hurdles to playing in the IPL have officially been cleared. However, claims of Amir having signed or confirmed to play in IPL 2027 are premature and baseless.

So far, Amir has not made any statement about playing in the IPL. He would consider playing in the tournament after discussions with his family and legal advisors.

Moreover, even if Amir gets the BCCI’s approval to participate in the IPL auction, it will be interesting to see if any franchise would want to risk courting controversy by buying him.

Ahead of IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced backlash for picking Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman in their squad amid the violence against Hindu communities in Bangladesh.

KKR had to release Rahman from their squad on the BCCI’s instructions. Similarly, picking Amir could create a big controversy for any IPL team, as he has a long association with Pakistan.
