India are now looking ahead to the next phase of their ODI cricket as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 gets closer. The team recently played a three-match ODI series against the West Indies and won it 2-1. However, the final match also raised some questions about the bowling attack.
India were also without some of their regular bowling options during the series. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh were unavailable, which gave other pacers a chance to prove themselves.
India will now travel to New Zealand for a three-match ODI series in November. The matches will be played from November 4 to 15 and will give the selectors another chance to look at their bowling options before the World Cup.
The BCCI has already announced India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, while the ODI squad is expected to be announced shortly.

Some unverified reports have claimed that Mohammed Shami could be considered for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. A comeback would give India another experienced option in the pace department.
It could also allow the selectors to see where Shami stands ahead of the World Cup. However, India already have several younger pacers in the setup.
Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar have received opportunities, while Arshdeep Singh remains another option. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are also important choices when available.
Mohammed Shami remains one of India’s most experienced fast bowlers. He last played an ODI for India in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025 and has not been part of the team’s ODI plans since then.
Shami’s experience could be useful as India prepare for the 2027 World Cup. He has played in several major ICC tournaments and has plenty of experience in high-pressure matches.
India’s bowling struggled in the third ODI against the West Indies. The hosts chased down 352 runs, which again raised the need for experienced backup options in the pace attack.
Former India batter Hanuma Vihari has also backed the return of Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He said India should have experienced pacers ready as backup options ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
For now, his selection is not confirmed. The upcoming ODI squad announcement will make it clear whether Mohammed Shami is back in India’s plans for New Zealand.
