Will ODI tri-series make return ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup 2027? Know here

ODI tri-series are amongst the most exciting campaigns in cricket.

One Day Internationals have existed for more than 50 years, with the first match being played in 1971. The format has gone through many changes over the years. It used to be played over 60 overs per innings before being reduced to 50 overs. White balls were also introduced, replacing red balls in the format.

However, it has remained the format that defines the best team in the world. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which is the pinnacle of this sport, is played in the ODI format, where teams compete against each other to win the precious World Cup trophy for their country.

With T20 cricket taking away all the headlines nowadays and Test cricket being preserved, there are often talks about changing the rules of ODI cricket again to save it from dying and make it more interesting. Many experts have already suggested that the format should be reduced to 40 overs, while many others have criticised this opinion.

However, Indian skipper Shubman Gill openly said that the ODI format should be left untouched and that teams need to play more ODI tri-series. England Cricket Board (ECB) chief Richard Gould has backed Shubman Gill’s opinion and hinted that we may see ODI tri-series in the near future.

Richard Gould backs Shubman Gill’s call for more ODI tri-series

A few weeks ago, in a press conference, Shubman Gill suggested that to make ODI cricket interesting again, there should probably be more triangular series instead of bilateral series.

He said: “One thing is that we used to play a lot of triangular series and it was really fun to watch. India, Australia and Sri Lanka used to play those tournaments. If I ever get a chance to play in a triangular series, it will be fun because you are not playing one team continuously. If we want to make this format more interesting, instead of having bilateral series, we can have triangular or quadrangular series. That’ll be interesting to play and to watch.”

According to Dainik Jagran, ECB CEO Richard Gould acknowledged Shubman Gill’s comments and hinted that there are possibilities of a tri-series taking place soon in the ODI format. He confirmed that several tri-series fixtures are already lined up over the coming 12 to 18 months.

He also mentioned that England’s own schedule currently leans towards formats that don’t stretch the calendar excessively, but the ECB will be open to exploring tri-series as a viable option in the future.
