Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could be making some big changes ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 after another disappointing season in the tournament. The five-time IPL champions failed to qualify for the playoffs once again, making it their third straight season without being in the top four since winning the title in 2023.
CSK finished the IPL 2026 season at 8th spot in the points table. Out of 14 matches they played in the season, CSK was able to win only six games. In the last three seasons combined, they have won just 17 matches and lost 25.
CSK once looked unbeatable under head coach Stephen Fleming and Captain MS Dhoni, but now, it looks like they are falling behind their own legacy. The modern T20 approach and injuries also played a big role in CSK’s disappointing performance in the IPL 2026.
Is Stephen Fleming’s time at CSK Over?
Stephen Fleming has been one of the most successful coaches in IPL history. The former New Zealand captain joined CSK in 2008 as a player and became head coach in 2009. Since then, he has been the core part of the franchise and guided the team to five trophies and two Champions League titles.
But in recent years, things have changed; CSK have struggled a lot to keep up with the aggressive and fearless cricket. Even though Chennai made a strong squad on paper compared to the previous seasons but they again failed terribly in 2026.
Will Rahul Dravid join CSK as head coach in IPL 2027?
In recent days, many reports said that the CSK were in talks with Rahul Dravid to replace Stephen Fleming as Head Coach of the franchise. Rahul Dravid is currently without an IPL team after leaving Rajasthan Royals before IPL 2026, and he also stepped down as India’s head coach after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan clearly denied these rumours and confirmed that no talks have taken place between the franchise and Dravid as of now.
“We have not taken a call on any cricketing matters. We will review at some stage,” CSK CEO told Cricbuzz.
As of now, Rahul Dravid joining CSK is just a possibility; however, the franchise has denied any official talks, but some heavy changes are expected after another disappointing season.
Has CSK Approached Rahul Dravid for the Head Coach role in IPL 2027?
No. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan denied these rumours and said that the franchise has not taken any call on cricketing matters yet.
Could MS Dhoni become CSK’s Coach or Mentor?
Dhoni’s future is still unclear; however, if he retires, he could take a mentor role as Sachin Tendulkar did at MI. Chennai has left the final decision to Dhoni.
