Will VVS Laxman replace Ajit Agarkar as BCCI’s chief selector? Know here

There have been various reports related to VVS Laxman taking over as head of selector.

The Indian Cricket Team is currently focused on the important Test tour of Sri Lanka, where they will play two-game series as a part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India are looking to make a strong comeback after having a rough phase in recent Test series.

Apart from these, Indian cricket has also witnessed several major developments. Injury concerns, questions over fitness standards and reports regarding the future of senior players. A lot of things are happening in Indian cricket, and we can expect some major call-ups in the coming weeks.

The Board is also expected to take important administrative decisions over the coming weeks. With the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) expected to take place in September, we can expect discussions around key positions within Indian cricket.

VVS Laxman to replace Ajit Agarkar as chief selector?

In the middle of all this, many reports claimed that the BCCI may be looking at a big change in its selection leadership. As per those reports, the former India batter VVS Laxman is being seen as a top contender to replace the current chief selector, Ajit Agarkar.

Agarkar’s current tenure is set to end in September 2026. Earlier, it was expected that he would have an extension to the 2027 ODI World Cup. But the recent events, including the debate around Rohit Sharma’s ODI future during the England tour, have made the board rethink its plans.

VVS Laxman is currently the Head of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. In this role, he has been closely involved with India’s emerging talent and has also stepped in as interim head coach for the T20I series in Zimbabwe.

His experience of working with domestic players, India A teams, Under-19 cricketers and the national setup has made him one of the most respected figures inside the BCCI system.

Reports also suggest that the chief selectors’ role could suit Laxman because it requires less travelling than the full-time head coach’s position. This would allow him to remain closely involved in shaping India’s future.

VVS Laxman unlikely to become new India selector

Interestingly, VVS Laxman recently addressed his current responsibilities during a press conference at the Centre of Excellence. Speaking to media, he said:

“CoE is not a rehab centre. There’s a bigger responsibility and mandate given by the BCCI.”

He also highlighted that the Centre of Excellence focused on overall player development rather than only rehabilitation.

“I moved to Bangalore in 2021 to continue the work that had already started and contribute towards Indian cricket.”

As per the reports in PTI, Laxman isn’t interested in selector’s role as of now. He was referring to the commitment he had already made to help establish the Centre of Excellence after declining the India head coach’s role in 2024.
