The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is set to get underway on October 3.

The ICC has decided to move the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 out of Bangladesh amid the political and civil unrest in the country. UAE will host the tournament. The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be played from October 3 to 20.

This decision was taken on August 20 in the virtual ICC board meeting, as reported by Cricbuzz.

Bangladesh was originally scheduled to host the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. However, considering the violent situation in the country forced by the protests, which resulted in the Sheikh Hasina government getting dissolved, the ICC took the decision to move the tournament out of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will continue to remain the official host of the tournament

UAE is selected as the new venue for its alignment with Bangladesh’s time zone. The ICC had reportedly first given BCCI the offer to host the tournament in India but board secretary Jay Shah refused the offer, citing the monsoon season in India in October.

Cricbuzz said in its report, “That the global event cannot be played in Bangladesh in the current circumstances was the overriding view of the Board members/directors, who attended the meeting. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is believed to have agreed to the shift. It will, however, continue to be the official host of the event.”

“Bangladesh has been grappling with internal violence, marked by student unrest and political turmoil, with reports of fatalities continuing to emerge despite the recent takeover by a new government. During the board meeting, concerns were raised that hosting the event in a country afflicted by such violence at this time may not be appropriate.”
