A total of five teams will participate in the Women’s Premier League 2024.
The much-awaited second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 is set to begin on February 23 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The tournament opener will be played between defending champions Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians and last year’s runners-up Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals.
With the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be hosted in Bangladesh between September and October 2024, the WPL 2024 will be a good stage for players to get some game-time and prepare for the prestigious tournament.
For overseas batters, the upcoming second edition of WPL is very important as they can acclimatize to the subcontinent pitches that they will get in Bangladesh for the T20 World Cup.
In the mega auction that was held in December, there were plenty of new signings, but some late injuries forced them to withdrew from the WPL 2024.
Kashvee Gautam, who was bought for a record-breaking Rs. 2 crore, will be the biggest miss at the upcoming season. The young player suffered a foot injury, which ruled her out of the tournament. Meanwhile, England skipper Heather Knight has withdrawn her name from the WPL to focus on the New Zealand series.
In the inaugural season of the WPL, Meg Lanning hammered 345 runs and won the orange cap, while the purple cap was won by Hayley Mathews, who picked up 16 wickets in the 2023 WPL tournament.
What is the format of WPL 2024?
The first leg of the WPL 2024 tournament will be played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru while New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium will host the second leg.
Unlike the first edition of the WPL tournament, all 22 games will start at 7:30 p.m. (evening) with no double headers throughout the league matches.
Every team will play the other team twice. The team that tops the table in the WPL 2024 will advance straight to the final. The teams ranking second and third will play each other in the eliminator. The winner of the eliminator match will face the table-toppers in the title match.
Changes made by teams from WPL 2023
WPL 2024 will see a few leadership changes as well as changes from last year’s coaching staff across different teams.
Veteran player Beth Mooney, who was ruled out last season due to an injury, will take over the captaincy duties from Indian player Sneh Rana. Mooney will return as skipper for the Gujarat Giants in the WPL 2024. Former Australian skipper Meg Lanning will continue to lead the Delhi Capitals.
Indian opener Smriti Mandhana will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore. Harmanpreet Kaur will continue as Mumbai Indians skipper. Alyssa Healy will lead her side UP Warriorz in WPL 2024.
Gujarat Giants parted ways with Rachael Haynes and hired former Australia batter Michael Klinger as head coach. RCB signed Luke Williams, who coached the Adelaide Strikers to victory in the WBBL.
