Deepti Sharma was the MVP of WPL 2024.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has been unveiled as the new captain of the UP Warriorz franchise for the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Deepti will take the captaincy role as Alyssa Healy, UP’s skipper in the first two seasons, was ruled out of the WPL 2025 because of a stress injury in her right foot.

Earlier, UP roped in West Indies’ Chinelle Henry as the replacement player for Healy into their squad. Now, they have announced Deepti as the captain.

Naming Deepti as their new skipper, UP Warriorz posted on social media, “Leader. Captain. Warrior. Presenting @Deepti_Sharma06 as your new captain for the upcoming #TATAWPL”

Under Healy, UP finished third in the league stage in the inaugural season in 2023 but lost the Eliminator to Mumbai Indians. In WPL 2024, UP finished fourth in the points table and couldn’t progress beyond the league stage.

Deepti has emerged as one of the most reliable all-rounders in the world, and a proper match-winner in Asian conditions. Apart from the WPL, she has featured in the women’s BBL and the women’s Hundred.

Talking about Deepti’s WPL record, in 17 matches, Deepti has scored 385 runs at an average of 38.50 and a strike rate of 118. She has claimed 19 wickets at an average of 27.68. Deepti is adept at bowling in the death overs as well.

The third edition of the WPL will get underway on February 14. UP will play their first game on February 16 against Gujarat Giants.
