Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed at the brink of a half-century in the SL vs IND 2nd Test.
The second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo produced an intense moment with Yashasvi Jaiswal clashing with Asitha Fernando in the first session of Day 1’s play following the Indian batters’ dismissal.
India entered the contest looking to complete the series 2-0 to enhance their chances of finishing in a better position in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. With both sides under pressure and looking to make an early impact in Colombo, the contest saw the rise of an unusual Test match spirit. Coming back to the dismissal, Jaiswal looked flawless until his dismissal, hence adding further significance to Fernando’s breakthrough.

Asitha Fernando dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal with a superb delivery that came back sharply from round the wicket. The batter attempted to punch through the off side but got a thick inside edge that crashed into the stumps. Fernando then issued an animated send-off for the departing batter.
Jaiswal, who was left baffled, first started walking back with his head hung low but then immediately turned back towards the bowler to confront him for some exchange of words. This immediately fuelled the exchange between the two, which took an ugly turn when Jaiswal clashed his helmet against the bowler, and they locked horns.
Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva stepped in to interrupt the two and avoided any further escalation of their confrontation.
Will Yashasvi Jaiswal face a ban for his actions?
A ban is not automatic under these circumstances, especially because it involved players from both sides. Jaiswal was, moreover, instigated by the Sri Lankan paceman; hence, any disciplinary action would entirely depend on the perception of the entire scenario by the match officials under relevant provisions of the ICC Code of Conduct.
The ICC Code of Conduct distinguishes between different levels of misconduct, with sanctions and penalties varying over different offences. Though surely Jaiswal’s actions do not immediately attract any disciplinary misconduct, it remains to be seen if the player is handed any demerit points by the match referee.
For now, the clash remains an ugly moment of on-field emotion; however, the final word on any disciplinary proceedings would only be initiated by the match officials based on the ICC’s formal process.
